Maverick Square Mural Project

The Maverick Square Mural is being produced for the Heritage Square Apartments located at 209 Sumner Street in East Boston, Massachusetts. The mural is a cooperative effort between three teams of student designers, several volunteers, the staff and residents of the Heritage apartments and myself. The project is being run as a "Special Topics" class through the Graphic Design Department of The New England Institute of Art in Brookline, Ma.

Special Topics classes attempt to foster service learning by engaging students in community service projects. In this case, we have been asked by the management of the Heritage Apartments, a housing project under the auspices of the Boston Housing Authority, located on the harbor in East Boston, to paint a mural that represents the residents of the family housing units located on their site. The families differ in age and ethnicity however they are all linked by their loyalty to their East Boston home. The challenge for student designers is to capture the pride residents take in the area as well as the individual character of their origins.
